The Magic Dress: The 4 Principles for Success


THE MAGIC DRESS, a fable, told in rhyme, aims to enhance self esteem and proomote leadership qualities while aiding in the prevention of eating disorders, substance abuse problems and violence among youth. Linda Blakeley portrays eight characters. In the story Gentry, the main character, is manipulated by Isolde the witch into believing physical perfections should be her ultimate goal. This leads to her obsession with her external appearance. Eventally, overcome by feelings of inner emptiness, she has near death experience. Only then does Gentry learn what it is to love herself from the inside out. She is introduced to Navid who becomes her pathfinder, taking her on a journey of the compass where she learns the meaning of self-worth and self-acceptance.

THE MAGIC DRESS stimulates the imagination and fosters creativity. It enhances positive self-images through the magic of live theatre. The powerful effectiveness of this genre bridges the gap between entertainment and education. It is a creative tool that can aid in the prevention of substance abuse, eating disorders, violence and other emotional problems

THE MAGIC DRESS performances are geared to the age of the specific audience. Performances usually last about an hour with another half hour devoted to feedback and discussion. This feedback session focuses on exploring the concepts brought out in the story. the goal of the feedback session is to empower the audinece to think reflectively, address problems and generate solutions.

PRE-PERFORMANCE questions are suppplied to help students grasp the concepts brought out in the play. POST-PERFORMANCE follow-up suggestions are given in the form of exercises and questions in order to maximize the impact of the performance on the audience. Suggestions for developing a Compass Club are given that can help students develop a positive outlet for their interests.
